Activities: Reaching Out to Kids in Need

Reaching Out To Kids In Need Logo The program is a compassionate response to homelessness.   Reaching Out to Kids in Need has a partnership with Ozanam Family Shelter and Naomi’s Way Transitional Housing Program.   The program reaches out to families with children moving out of the shelter.   While in the shelter they save every penny they can in order to move out.   When they move out, they are placed into unfurnished apartments or homes.   Youth Council adopts the families and assists with getting in-kind donations from furniture, toiletries, household items, and many other much needed items.   The families receive support so they can start a new.

The group also hosts activities at Youth Consultation Services New Brunswick Group Home and the Covenant House in Newark.

When the homeless clients move out of the Shelter and into housing we help by "adopting" families with children and help them move out of the Shelter, making their transition into mainstream society much easier.   Clients are placed into unfurnished apartments.   By "adopting" the families we help set up a client's apartment with the following.

  • Sheets, pillows and pillow cases
  • Furniture including chairs, table, couch
  • Alarm clock
  • Toiletries items such as shampoo, soap and toilet paper
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Cleaning supplies including brooms, mops and cleaning sprays
  • Laundry detergent
  • Microwave
  • Toaster
  • TV
  • Kitchen item such as paper towels, rags, hot pads, measuring cups, etc.   (PNS provides clients with plates, cups, utensils and a small set of cookware.)
